I wanted to create a spooky atmosphere for this piece, so I covered my paper with vine charcoal and rubbed it in with a tissue. I used the vine to draw the sketch, then pulled out the light areas with a kneaded eraser. To darken up some of the values and to add details, I used a black charcoal pencil. I like the way this technique allows for such a broad range of values, but also lets me get the fine details that I want.
love your technique. it gives a certain texture and an eerie atmosphere in the drawing. just wonderful!

ReplyDeleteGreat! - the variety of tones makes this so effective and it's really interesting to hear how you achieved it.
ReplyDeleteLove it! It reminds me a little of Maurice Sendak! (o:
ReplyDeleteThis is amazingly great!!! Very spooky!!!
ReplyDeleteCaptured the word beautifully....this should be on the front of IF.
ReplyDeleteThe technique is very effective, the tonal range is good and you have avoided the 'grey goo' problem so many people face when they use pencils to create a final piece, and feel they cannot call the drawing finished until every inch of the picture is covered in pencil ;) nice Maurice Sendak reference, and goo dmix of hard and soft edges. I like this a lot.
